Portrait of Scat: Sunset

2
One of the most vivid memories I have of the high school I briefly went to for A-levels was one of Scat’s friends, Tammy, deciding to draw three of us girls on the white board in front of the Physics lab. The other two girls were thin, pretty and rather easy to draw. When it came to me, she gave a few rather honest details, like my curly black hair sticking out, my body wider, a lot wider than I actually was- and my shoelaces undone, in a mess…. I felt a twist in my chest looking at the drawings. I’d thought she’d offered in good friendly faith, and so I’d tried to draw her too- at least her torso and angular face. When she was done, I asked her to come over and see her portrait. She wore a nice sweet smile as she ran over to look- I was beginning to distrust that smile, she wore it when she had been the most b*tchy. A Hollywood teen flick mean girl copycat. Weird how everyone called her a b*tch behind her back , but not one of them called her out in her face. Not anyone, not even me. I wish to this day that I had.

Tammy and her best friend Sam were the mean/cool girls of that school. Just like Hollywood. I wasn’t used to that, as my old school had been much less clichéd. Mean Girls had just come out, so that may have explained it.
Tammy was Iraqi, and her older brother was killed in his home in the war, probably while he was doing something ordinary and boring and human like playing video games, most likely by American bombs. Sam was a mixture of many things, including American. And her brother was in the American army in Iraq. Her brother died and her brother killed in the same war.
And they were best friends.
